DWIMS hosts theological symposium with Fr. Stephen Bevans, SVD about his latest book “Community of Missionary Disciples: The Continuing Creation of the Church”

Tagaytay City—The Divine Word Institute of Mission Studies (DWIMS) hosted an engaging theological symposium last April 19, 2024, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, at the Holy Spirit Chapel.

The symposium featured the talk by prominent theologian Fr. Stephen B. Bevans, SVD, Professor Emeritus of Mission and Culture, at the Catholic Theological Union (CTU) in Chicago, USA. In his talk, Fr. Stephen presented his latest work, the book “Community of Missionary Disciples: The Continuing Creation of the Church”, offering attendees insight into his ecclesiological framework, consistent with the vision of Pope Francis of a synodal Church.

The symposium was moderated by Fr. Antonio Pernia, SVD, DWIMS Vice Director for Studies.

The symposium formally began with an opening message from Fr. Samuel N. Agcaracar, SVD, director of DWIMS. In his message, Fr. Agcaracar emphasized the importance of the theme of the event and of Fr. Stephen’s book, “a relevant theme that has spanned decades of ecclesiological discussions and debates.”

Afterwards, Fr. Stephen delivered his talk about his book. In his talk, he emphasized the importance of understanding the Church as a dynamic and evolving community engaged in mission.

Following Fr. Stephen' presentation, three responders provided their reflections on different parts of Fr. Stephen’s book.

First, Fr. Edgar G. Javier, SVD, DMiss, founder of DWIMS, discussed "The Essence of the Church," examining how the Church's core values shape its mission in the modern world.

Second, Dr. Amalia Teresita Rosana, PhD, from the Institute of Consecrated Life in Asia, delved into "The Mystery of the Church," highlighting the complex, spiritual, and mystical dimensions of the Church's role in society.

Third, Dr. Arnold Monera, PhD, also from DWIMS, explored "The Structure of the Church," addressing how the Church's organizational framework supports its mission.

The symposium concluded with an open forum, allowing attendees to engage directly with Fr. Bevans. This interactive session fostered meaningful dialogue on the themes presented and offered participants a chance to delve deeper into the book's topics.

The event was a resounding success, providing an enriching experience for all in attendance and contributing to the ongoing discourse on missionary discipleship and the future of the Church.
